The life of the women of the Congress through their dresses
🎙️ Collective documentation
The participants in the collective documentation comment, with nostalgy and joy, on the memories that this photograph evokes, where the mother of one of the participants from the Fem Memòries group appears. Stories of dressmakers and maids, formal attire, great dances, and inequalities emerge from this image.
They establish a relationship between the upper class and the working class and how, within these relationships of work and inequality, daily life unfolded. The dressmaker who made dresses for the ladies of high society and also made beautiful dresses for herself ("my aunts, as they were dressmakers, well, they liked to dress elegantly, even if they were poor..."), the maids who made use of clothes given to them by wealthy women giving them new lives for their daily wear, or the construction workers who built grand houses, beautifully decorated, only to return to their own modest homes at night ("at night, the workers returned to their neighborhoods... So, there was a super-rich social class and then, the others, the working-class. There were also skilled workers").
Another aspect they highlight is the improvements that the neighborhood offered when it was built. They highlight washhouses, bathrooms, and running water within the houses of the Congress, as great luxuries and a significant improvement for the lives of its residents. One participant points out that, although having individual washhouses in each house gave a sense of status, it was also used, in the context of the dictatorship, to abolish a meeting space where women could organize themselves. Once again, the role of women emerges as a key element, both for the household economy (for example, as dressmakers sewing for the ladies of Barcelona) and as social fighters, in a turbulent political period fraught with risks to personal security.
