In this session, we will explore the concept of Network Graphs and data entities as a tool for inferring power relationships and events. We will do this by exploring projects that use this technique to visualize the actors within the emails related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Syllabus:
Presentation of well-known visualization projects on the Epstein archives
Deduction vs. Induction: We will see what kind of machine-driven certainty a Knowledge Graph can provide compared to the certainty offered by artificial intelligence.
Data Entities vs. Traditional Databases: We will see how data entities are a more scalable technique for building analyses with unstructured data. We will learn from Wikidata how to access a seed of entities that will help us accelerate our data projects.
No programming knowledge is required, but we recommend bringing your laptop because we will be working with datasets during the session.
About the workshop facilitator:
Ali González-García is a philosopher and developer with 12 years of experience in civic technology: activist technology for social and public sector purposes. She has been part of Collas de Dades in approximately five Mexican cities. She has served as a public servant focused on open government and technological innovation for various administrations. Currently, she serves on the coordinating committee of Decidim, a digital public good recognized by the UN and initially developed by the Barcelona City Council. She is the Innovation Advisor for the Monterrey City Council in Mexico, where she advises on the city's technology strategy, and she is the editor of the technical specifications for the GovStack initiative.
Afterwards, we will work in teams on the Colla's active projects. If this is your first time attending, you can join one of the current active projects:
