Party walls are born anonymous, intended solely to separate properties, with no intention of ever becoming part of a façade. But urban development follows its own logic, and these blank walls often end up exposed in the middle of the public space.
This exhibition presents the results of the international ideas competition promoted by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation and Barcelona City Council on the occasion of Barcelona’s designation as the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture 2026. The call, open to young architects from around the world, invited participants to intervene in ten party walls, one in each district, leaving a lasting urban imprint. The winning proposals will be brought to life as part of the official programme of activities, becoming a tangible legacy of Barcelona 2026.
The exhibition also includes an overview of Barcelona’s Party Wall Remodelling Plan, which has been underway for the past twenty-five years to address these exposed walls and improve their integration into the urban landscape. The competition is now linked to this initiative, expanding its scope within the framework of Barcelona 2026.
Organized by: Barcelona World Capital of Architecture.
