"Maternity" sculpture from Congress Square

🎙️ Collective documentation

The participants of the collective documentation comment on the beauty of this sculpture and its symbolic meaning: it represents motherhood. The author of the photograph, a member of the Fem Memòries del Canòdrom(Opens in new tab) group, shares that the girl in the image is her daughter and that they often used to take walks near the sculpture, at Plaza del Congreso. So, the sculpture brings back very good memories for her. She also mentions that a few years ago, one of the sculpture's arms was broken and has not been repaired. The participants observe that it does not have any identifying plaque or inscription. One of them notices a signature in one corner of the base, but only a few letters are barely identifiable.

After conducting an internet search, the participants find more information about the sculpture: it's called "Maternitat(External link)" and is the work of the Salamancan sculptor Jacinto Bustos, who signed as Vasallo. Inaugurated in 1961, it's a stone sculpture, of a figurative character, with a smooth profile and rounded forms. It depicts a seated mother, with open arms in a welcoming gesture, and a baby nestled in her lap. Originally, it was situated on the grass.
