Memories of Holy Week

🎙️ Documentació col·lectiva

The participants in the collective documentation share their childhood memories during Holy Week. As shown in the image, the neighbors dressed up nicely and went out to the streets together to raise palm leaves and palm branches while the parish priest gave the blessing. At the end of the event, traditionally, they would hang the palm leaf or palm branch on the balcony until it wore out or until the following year. They emphasize that the palms and palm branches were previously adorned by artisans.

During Holy Week, it was also common to visit the neighborhood church or other churches in Barcelona with family. Images emerge of saints covered inside the churches, fervent looks of the parishioners, and dark dresses, especially those of the grandmothers. They also recall the smell of incense and myrrh.

Beyond the religious events, for them, it was moments of fun, like small school vacations. Moments to share with friends and cousins and to play in the neighborhood. They also remember the bakeries in the Congrés neighborhood and the sweets of the season: on Easter Monday, the Easter cake (mona de Pascua) was a must. "For me, the most exciting thing about the Easter cake was the colorful feathers. I wanted the cake, but first, the colorful feathers!"
