What happens when the neighborhood decides not to accept the silent expulsion that defines the contemporary real estate market? Real estate speculation is one of the great engines of structural violence in Barcelona. The city is emptied of neighborhood while investment funds buy entire buildings to empty them and make a box. But there are places where the script is written differently, and Casa Orsola, a modernist building in the heart of the Esquerra de l’Eixample in Barcelona, is one of them.
At the end of 2021, the company Lioness Inversiones bought the property. The news reached the neighborhood through a drip of bureaucracies as rental contracts were extinguishing: the new property announced that it would not renew any. They could have accepted a script that in the city is replicated in silence, but they decided to turn it around. They were organized with the Leather Union to demand renewal and be able to stay at home. It is here that the Directa begins to monitor it, intuning that the case can become a double symbol: of the modus operandi of the real estate business and, at the same time, of the neighborhood resistance that challenges it.
