Party walls are the side walls that separate two buildings. They are not intended to remain visible, but when the adjacent building is demolished and, due to urban development, is not rebuilt, these walls become exposed to the public space and often create real problems for the homes attached to them. A bare party wall is not just a grey blot on the urban landscape; it can also lead to dampness, poor insulation and higher heating bills for the people living next to it.

In this talk and discussion, we will explore how these transformations improve public space and the quality of life in neighbourhoods, the benefits they bring to local communities, and the support available to make them possible. We will also present the planned project in the Sant Martí district, together with the team of architects who developed it and experts from the Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape.

As part of the World Capital of Architecture programme, an international competition will transform seventeen party walls across ten sites, one in each district, with projects to be carried out during 2026 as a lasting legacy for the city. In the same space, you can also visit the related exhibition, «From Party Walls to Façades. A Legacy for the City».

Organized by: Barcelona World Capital of Architecture and HP.

In collaboration with: Canòdrom.
