Growing up between screens?
Education, technologies, and democracy
Introduction
Cycle of participatory debates where we will reflect on the issues and limits that involve the use of digital tools among young people. We raise different questions:
1️⃣ What technological model is behind the current situation?
2️⃣ What impacts does this model have on the health of growing individuals?
3️⃣ How is the digitization model included in schools?
4️⃣ Does it allow us to eliminate inequalities, or is it leading us to consolidate a digital divide?
5️⃣ And what do the protagonists think?
Details
Currently, we are immersed in an intense debate about the use of screens and mobile devices in childhood and adolescence. This introduction of technology at early ages has raised concerns and limitations within the current digitization model. It has opened Pandora's box regarding the digital society we are constructing, with a special focus on the youngest members.
Some main concerns and limitations of a specific digitization model have been expressed, where the public has had little impact so far. It is good news that a civic debate is unfolding, with the participation of the educational community, governments, social organizations, and citizens exploring a terrain filled with diverse interests and needs. In the face of a complex problem, there are no simple solutions, but addressing the debate with all voices is crucial. This is democracy.
With the cycle, “Growing up amidst screens? Education, technologies, and democracy,” we aim to critically explore digitization models and their relationship with childhood and adolescence. Through dialogue and listening to diverse voices, we seek to create a participatory space to analyze issues, impacts, risks, and opportunities. We emphasize the importance of digital well-being, fundamental and digital rights, addressing issues such as control over digital platforms, health impacts, education in digital rights, and democratic digitization. Additionally, we consider inequality in technology access and highlight the perspective of adolescents in addressing the issue. We encourage you to participate in this open debate space at Canòdrom to explore these issues and identify possible paths for the future. Simultaneously, we will incorporate the voices of adolescents through a co-creation session to detect risks and potentialities of digital technologies. Is it possible to find common ground?
