Canodrom's Grandstands | UNDER THE FIG TREES (Taht alshajra)

Northern Tunisia, Mediterranean summer: lorries arrive to collect the workers who will begin a new day's work in the fig orchard. Between the branches of the trees, Under the Fig Trees (Taht alshajra) is a sensual and political letter to young Maghrebi women who, like the fruit ripening in the sun, desire to grow and be free within a patriarchal society that suffocates them. Erige Sehiri's debut feature, characterised by the brilliant performances of a non-professional cast, was presented in the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes.
